Citywealth Leaders List, 60 seconds interview – Andrew Cumming, JM Finn
This week’s 60 seconds Citywealth Leaders List interview is dedicated to Andrew Cumming, Investment Director at JM Finn.

Tell Citywealth readers a bit about your role
As an Investment Director at JM Finn, I manage investment portfolios for private clients, many of whom are long standing relationships or multi generational family groups. My focus is on delivering investment strategies that reflect each client’s long term objectives, risk profile and personal circumstances, working closely with our in house wealth planning team to provide a fully integrated service.
What does a typical day look like for you?
No two days are the same, but much of my time is spent speaking with clients, reviewing portfolios and assessing market developments. I work closely with colleagues across wealth planning to ensure our advice remains relevant. Alongside this, I am also involved in developing new client relationships and contributing to broader business initiatives within the firm.
Tell us about some recent, interesting client instructions/requests you have received
Many of my clients are increasingly focussed on how their investments align with their broader financial plans and personal values. This has included working with clients in more complex situations where long term cashflow modelling is essential to ensure sustainable outcomes.
What challenges do your clients face and how are you helping your clients to overcome them?
Many clients are focussed on longer term challenges such as retirement planning and intergenerational wealth transfer to younger family members. My role is to provide clarity and consistency, ensuring portfolios are appropriately structured, risks are well managed and that investment decisions are aligned with each client’s capacity for risk. Close collaboration with our wealth planning team is key to helping clients make informed decisions with confidence.
What is your proudest professional achievement?
I am most proud of the long standing relationships I have built with clients and the trust they place in me to manage their wealth. Much of my business comes through personal referrals, which reflects the strength of those relationships and the consistent delivery of high quality, personalised advice over time.
What do you consider to be the most important attributes for a leader?
Integrity, consistency and the ability to listen are fundamental. In wealth management, trust is everything, and strong leadership comes from setting clear standards, supporting colleagues and ensuring clients remain at the centre of every decision.
As a former soldier , Euripides quote still stands the test of time.
“Ten good soldiers wisely led will beat a hundred without a head.”
Who do you most admire and why?
Benjamin Graham
Benjamin Graham’s emphasis on valuation and downside protection remains as relevant today as ever. His principles of investing with a margin of safety underpin much of how we think about risk and portfolio construction.
Where was the last place you travelled to for work or pleasure?
Much of my work travel tends to revolve around client meetings and JM Finn events, which provide an opportunity to strengthen relationships in a more informal setting, whether in London or further afield.
For pleasure I recently travelled on the SS Sudan up the River Nile which as the son of a former diplomat brought back many fond memories of my childhood.
If you weren’t in this industry, what else might you be doing?
I have been passionate about young people, and mental health for many years and have been instrumental in fundraising and embedding wider support at JM Finn for two excellent charities in this area – the Charlie Waller Trust and Young Minds, so potentially work related to this area.
How do you relax after a long day?
Spending time with family and getting away from the screens is important. I also enjoy watching and playing cricket – so am fortunate to be able to benefit from JM Finn’s partnership with the Surrey County Cricket Club by catching up with clients at the Kia Oval and watching a match together.
Living in East Anglia , I am passionate about the countryside and enjoy attending to my flock of Portland sheep and unruly Buff Orpington chickens.
