The Global Landscape of Private Banking 2025
In 2025 we update our editorial to include: “Private banking has long had its heart in Switzerland, home to more than 80 private banks and the headquarters of global leaders such as UBS. Switzerland has evolved from a discreet wealth haven into the world’s largest private banking hub, adapting to stricter transparency and anti-money laundering laws. Private banking has its heart in Switzerland where there are many of the leading private bank worldwide, with 80+ of them nestled in the country. They are wealth management experts. The traditional home of private wealth and home to Top Private Bankers, it has, like many countries, had to adapt to changing laws; anti money laundering and transparency requirements. With UBS as one of its key businesses, it can now call itself the biggest private bank in the world, not just in Switzerland. But Switzerland is not the whole story, there are many clusters across the world of private banks including in the UK; USA and mainland Europe.
Much misunderstood as a concept to the uninitiated, private banking is a more gentle financial concept to manage large amounts of wealth from inheritances or business sales; it often includes a lifestyle, as many banks court this type of business and sponsor sporting and art events. Private banks and Top private bankers are useful for the point people reach ‘after they’ve made it’. They are trusted advisors for the UHNW client. It is not about beating stock market returns, although investments is what they do; it is a longer game of succession for your wider family and ensuring money has a steward and perspective against your life goals. It can also engage your children in understanding finance.
The Role of Private Banking through to 2025
In recent years there has been much talk about reviews to check fee charges and monitoring situations, like preventing being in property investments three times over. This means the industry and Top private bankers, have improved its own standards. It is a specialist and niche area of banking, reserved for a select customer. Philanthropy is embedded in its culture, and so is tax and trusts. Ultimately managing money is an art and if you are busy doing something else you would be wise to have a private banker by your side.
Mergers & Industry Trends
We are also seeing ‘megamergers’ in the sector with Rathbones and Investec joining forces this year. Rathbones is a very British insitution and involved in a serious way with its Greenbank in ESG. Investec is more new-world business, particularly South Africa. The synergies allow both banks to grow and to reduce costs in an ever burdensome compliance environment.
Private banking is a wonderful career which takes financial skills and a good network. With that Citywealth is pleased to round up our selection of the best for your perusal. Related content on Top Private Bankers here. Also on Dubai. Meet the Citywealth Top 25 Private Bankers!
