Tell Citywealth readers a bit about your role.

I am a Wealth Manager and this is effectively a Financial Planner working exclusively with the clients of a team of Investment Managers.  We are pioneering a new service whereby we provide holisitic financial planning and investment management for a single clearly defined fee.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I start by catching up on any emails or calls that have come in from clients overnight.  I then meet with my team to initiate any work, from the overnight messages, and to get updates on work in progress.  The rest of the day is filled with client meetings or working on client advice.

Tell us about some recent, interesting client instructions/requests you have received.

I was working with a third generation client to agree a responsible budget for some overseas travel in the period between their graduation, next spring, and the start of their career, next Autumn.

What challenges do your clients face and how are you helping your clients to overcome them?

Clients are currently concerned about when they can afford to retire.  They are faced with a combination of rising living costs and an increasing tax burden.  They need to generate more income to maintain their current standard of living whilst minimising ongoing tax liabilities.   We use cashflow software to demonstrate the level of income that their portfolio can safely sustain in retirement and the potential resulting tax liabilities.  This provides reassurance that their retirement is both affordable and sustainable.

Are there any top of mind themes for you or your clients?

From 6th April 2027, unspent pension funds will be included in the estate for the purposes of Inheritance Tax.  This is a major change that will significantly increase the potential IHT liability on many estates.  This is the main issue that clients want to discuss when we meet.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

I like to hear about client’s bucket list trips when it is something that they have planned for and talked about over many years.  Helping them achieve their dreams, and make special memories, is perhaps one of the most rewarding parts of my role.

What do you consider to be the most important attributes for a leader?

I think adaptability is one of the most important attributes for a leader.  Change in life is inevitable and leaders need to be able to adapt to this and keep their team and company at the forefront.  Effective teams are also made up of a blend of different characters so an effective leader needs to be able to adapt their management style to get the best out of all their team members.

Who do you most admire and why?

I admire Rory McIlroy as he has been in the public spotlight from an early age.  He came up short on many occasions, when trying to complete golf’s grand slam, and he did not shy away from this.  He never gave up, continued to work hard and believe, and he eventually succeeded and completed the grand slam.

Where was the last place you travelled to for work or pleasure?

I have recently returned from a trip to Malaga.  I enjoy the local cuisine and wine and it is one of our go to places when we are looking for a short break to unwind.

If you weren’t in this industry, what else might you be doing?

If I wasn’t working in financial services, I would like to be a caddy at one of the nearby golf courses, such as Gleneagles, Kingsbarns or Dumbarnie.

How do you relax after a long day?

I enjoy a walk in the countryside followed by a pint in our local pub on the way back home.
