David Ravel

Tell Citywealth readers a bit about your role.

As a wealth manager, I specialise in serving high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families. My role involves a comprehensive approach to wealth management, which includes working with a fascinating range of professionals, co-ordinating everything from establishing trusts to navigating complex international planning and cross-jurisdictional issues. I have developed a particular expertise in working with clients in the sports, media, music and film sectors, as well as families engaged in the textile industry. My passion lies in not just managing wealth but also in building a sustainable textiles community within LGT, where I help families adopt eco-friendly practices and promote sustainability in their businesses. This holistic approach allows me to create tailored solutions that align with clients’ values and aspirations while working to ensure their wealth is preserved and grown over generations.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me is dynamic and multifaceted. I often start my mornings reviewing market trends and client portfolios, preparing for meetings with clients who rely on me for strategic advice. My calendar usually includes a mix of one-on-one meetings, where I delve into personalised wealth management strategies, and collaborative sessions with my team to discuss innovative solutions. I also allocate time to engage with industry professionals and attend networking events, which helps me stay informed about emerging trends and opportunities. Importantly, I make it a point to mentor junior colleagues and advocate for women in finance, actively contributing towards the inclusive culture within our firm. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities, and I thrive on the engagement that comes from working with such diverse and inspiring clients.

Tell us about some recent, interesting client instructions/requests you have received.

Recently, I had the privilege of working with a high-profile client in the film industry who wanted to establish a philanthropic trust aimed at supporting emerging filmmakers, particularly women and underrepresented voices in the industry. This project not only addressed their immediate wealth management needs but also aligned with their passion for fostering diversity and inclusivity in the arts. Additionally, I’ve been approached by a family in the textiles sector seeking guidance on integrating sustainable practices into their business model. We’ve been exploring innovative ways to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining profitability, which has been an exciting challenge that aligns with my commitment to sustainability.

What challenges do your clients face and how are you helping your clients to overcome them?

My clients often navigate a range of challenges, from succession planning to regulatory complexities that can arise when dealing with international assets. For instance, many of my clients in the entertainment industry face unique pressures related to public scrutiny and the volatile nature of their careers. I help them develop robust succession plans that address both their financial goals and their personal values, ensuring a smooth transition of wealth to the next generation. My goal is to empower my clients with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their wealth and legacy.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

One of my proudest achievements is the establishment of a sustainable textiles community within LGT. This initiative has allowed me to collaborate with families in the textile industry to adopt eco-friendly practices that not only enhance their business operations but also contribute positively to the environment. Seeing these families embrace sustainability has been incredibly rewarding, as it reflects a commitment to future generations. Additionally, I take pride in my role as a mentor to young professionals which I do through the university I attended.  Many of the students come from diverse backgrounds and part of the networking community is focused on working with women and helping them navigate paths to careers in finance.  It is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work, and it reinforces my belief in the importance of allyship.

What do you consider to be the most important attributes for a leader?

In my view, the most important attributes for a leader include integrity, empathy and the ability to inspire and motivate others. A leader must be authentic and transparent in their actions, fostering trust and respect among colleagues and clients alike. Empathy is crucial, as it allows leaders to understand the perspectives and challenges of those they work with, creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. Additionally, the ability to inspire others is vital for driving change and fostering innovation. A great leader empowers their team, encourages collaboration, and recognises the contributions of individuals. These qualities not only help in achieving business goals but also in nurturing a positive workplace culture.

Who do you most admire and why?

This is a very tricky one – on one hand it would be my Nana – she inspired me to be the person I am today and fought through many challenges of a very tough working class upbringing to become someone who achieved a lot in her life.  I also have to add one of the most incredible people I have the privilege of working with on a host of projects at the moment – Angela Rippon.  Angela is a true trailblazer in the media industry – she was not only the first presenter of Top Gear, but being a female presenting a show about cars in the1970’s was genuinely ground breaking. Her career is a testament to breaking barriers and championing women’s rights, and she continues to inspire many with her advocacy. Angela has maintained a reputation for professionalism and resilience, and her ability to pave the way for future generations of women in leadership roles is something I deeply respect. She embodies the essence of what it means to be a role model, demonstrating that success is achievable through hard work, determination, and a strong ethical compass. In addition to her professional achievements, her commitment to charitable causes, particularly those that support the elderly and those with complex medical conditions, resonates with my own values. I aspire to emulate her leadership style, combining professionalism with compassion, and I draw inspiration from her journey as I navigate my own career.

Where was the last place you travelled to for work or pleasure?

The last place I travelled to was Berlin, where I had the incredible opportunity to meet with a well-known A-list actor and his exceptional artist wife. This trip was particularly enriching, as I engaged in discussions about sustainable practices within the entertainment industry. We explored innovative ways to promote eco-friendly initiatives in film and creative projects, aligning our shared passion for sustainability with the world of arts and entertainment. It was a fantastic blend of professional networking and personal inspiration, and I returned home with fresh insights and ideas for integrating sustainability into creative ventures.

If you weren’t in this industry, what else might you be doing?

If I weren’t in wealth management, I would likely have pursued a career in film, television, or music, possibly focusing on talent management or film finance. I’ve always been drawn to the creative arts, and I would relish the opportunity to have a more hands-on role in shaping the careers of emerging talents or contributing to innovative projects in the film industry. I believe that my background in wealth management would provide a unique perspective on the business side of these creative fields, allowing me to foster both artistic vision and financial sustainability.

How do you relax after a long day?

After a long day, I find great joy in unwinding with my family and friends. Music and film are significant parts of my life, and I love to immerse myself in a good movie or concert, whether it’s discovering new artists or revisiting classic films. Sharing these experiences with loved ones creates wonderful memories and enriches our connections. Additionally, I enjoy cooking as a way to relax and express my creativity. Experimenting with new recipes or preparing a family favourite allows me to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Often, I invite family over for a meal, where we can share stories, laugh, and celebrate our time together, making every day a little brighter.
