Broughton Sanctuary’s autumn retreats programme reflects a new direction in the retreat sector, towards more immersive experiences that challenge, educate and transform. Broughton, set in 2,500 acres in the Yorkshire Dales, is consistently pushing boundaries and exploring new avenues in retreating. Their autumn schedule incorporates samurai-inspired leadership, feminine mythology, men’s life transitions, consciousness and the relationship between science and spirituality.
The Advaya Retreat: When Women Were the Land (18–22 October)
Created by Advaya and led by writer, scholar of myth and ancient matrifocal histories and wildlife tracker Sylvia V. Linsteadt, this five-day retreat explores the relationship between women, the earth and the mythologies of pre-patriarchal Europe. Combining storytelling, creative writing, nature connection, animal tracking, embodiment, ceremony and time in Broughton’s rewilded landscape, it takes a deliberately holistic approach to reconnecting participants with ancestry, imagination and the natural world.

Science and Consciousness – Wyrd Psi (26–30 October)
Taking a very different direction, this five-day gathering explores the boundaries between scientific research and experiences of consciousness that sit outside conventional scientific models. Developed in partnership with Psi Games, the programme looks at phenomena including ESP, psychokinesis and experiences of non-local consciousness, combining talks and experiential exploration. It builds on decades of consciousness research associated with the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research laboratory and is particularly pertinent to Broughton, which houses equipment from those experiments.

ZERO RESET Men’s Retreat (30 October–1 November)
The ZERO RESET takes a more contemporary, performance-oriented approach to personal transformation, targeting men at a significant transition or “point of zero” in their lives – whether that relates to career, relationships, fatherhood, health or purpose. Across three days, participants work on personal vision and goals alongside physical practices including movement, hiking and cold immersion, breathwork, meditation and exploration of masculinity. Importantly, the experience extends beyond the retreat itself through pre- and post-retreat sessions and accountability calls.

The Female Samurai: A Leadership Retreat for Women (12–15 November)
Drawing on the philosophy and traditions of the samurai, this four-day retreat offers a distinctive approach to female leadership. Rather than focusing simply on conventional leadership skills, it explores qualities associated with the female samurai – including presence, grace, discipline and calm authority – and translates these ideas into a contemporary context for women. Participants will explore mythic imagination, nature, philosophy and embodied practice, asking how we might create a living spiritual tradition relevant to contemporary life. It represents a more intellectually rigorous strand of the emerging retreat market – one concerned not simply with relaxation or self-care, but with meaning, belonging and our relationship with the wider living world.
