Trust companies have successfully navigated recent waves of international scrutiny, with jurisdictions passing MoneyVal assessments and meeting enhanced anti-money laundering (AML) standards. While compliance demands remain high, the industry has proven its resilience. The cost of maintaining this regulatory strength is contributing to consolidation across the private client sector. At the same time, global geopolitical tensions, tax changes, sanctions and elections are driving significant shifts in wealth. In response, firms are expanding into new markets such as Dubai, where demand for structuring services is growing. However, in parts of the Middle East, there is still a strong cultural preference for retaining control over assets—something that can sit uneasily with the trust model. Events such as the Gaza conflict are beginning to reshape these attitudes, as families increasingly look to protect wealth from political risk.
The trust sector is now more robust and regulated than ever, with governments working to remove bad actors and strengthen the industry’s foundations. Whether independent or private equity-backed, leading trust firms are helping families navigate succession planning in a changing global environment. At a recent Citywealth IFC Awards judges’ lunch, one emerging trend was the widening gap in company scale—some firms have grown to employ thousands, while others operate with a much leaner team. It reflects an industry evolving in both structure and ambition, but firmly rooted in professional integrity.
