Saunas have always been a spa staple, but the hype around the benefits of sweating it all out in the last few years has propelled the popularity of saunas to new heights. Dano-Swedish couple Cecile and Jakob identified their market in 2019 and laid the foundation for a completely new offering: custom mobile saunas. Following soaring demand and huge success in Scandinavia and Japa, the couple’s Denmark-based venture Scandinavian Saunas is ready to extend its presence to the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Jakob said: “In most countries, you need a building permit to build a sauna, which makes the process too difficult for a lot of people. That’s why we’re firmly committed to the potential that there’s an untapped market for mobile saunas. And we’re taking that potential seriously from a design standpoint. As an architect, it’s in my power to design saunas that not only fulfil the technical requirements, such as heat distribution and multi-level seating, but also deliver comfort and a design imbued with materials and aesthetics that honour nature and our Scandinavian design heritage.”

He adds: “United Kingdom is the ideal match for us. We feel that United Kingdom is the perfect place to match with customers who can appreciate the immense amount of hard work that goes into designing and developing our product. United Kingdom represents functionality, meticulousness, and top-notch quality, which goes hand-in-hand with our aspirations for our design and product.”

Every sauna produced by the company is meticulously constructed, as the couple aim to optimize each design for the best possible technical and aesthetic effect. No sauna is identical to the next, as their approach evolves with each product to update and refine design. The website says: “While it can be tempting to add functionality, anything that is not directly adding to your experience of enjoying heat in nature, is not included. We think of the sauna as a practical tool that people also hopefully find beautiful. We didn’t want the architecture to take center stage or appear dominating in any way. It’s a space as much for looking inwards as out, and for enjoying nature in a way that you cannot do without a Scandinavian Sauna. We started looking at other mobile saunas such as barrel saunas and improved some of the design flaws on the barrel such as an oven obstructing the view, lack of level seating, lack of a changing room, low head height, lazy integration with the trailer etc.”

Prices start from €18,000 for the standard ‘small’ sauna, which fits 4 people. Delivered fully assembled and ready to use minutes after delivery, the saunas come complete with a wide range of equipment, a 60-year warranty on its metal roof, high-quality Finnish wood-burner oven and more.
