This week’s 60-second piece is dedicated to Miranda Nairn, Senior Associate at Katz Partners.

Tell Citywealth readers a bit about your role.

I am a family solicitor at Katz Partners LLP dealing with mainly high net worth financial cases on divorce along with pre and post nuptial agreements and private children work.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days are very varied. I may be attending a court hearing on a matter, having calls or meetings with clients and barristers, drafting letters and witness statements or reviewing and collating disclosure for financial proceedings on divorce.

Tell us about some recent, interesting client instructions.

We act for a range of clients all of whom have interesting backgrounds and stories. A recent case involved assets of over £100m, including significant inherited assets, a family business and multiple properties. We argued (successfully) that a significant part of the assets should be ringfenced because of their inherited nature.

What challenges do your clients face and how are you helping your clients to overcome them?

Divorce and financial proceedings often make clients (particularly high net worth clients who are used to being in charge and who usually have carriage of business outcomes) feel out of control. Our role is to guide a client through a difficult, emotional and time-consuming process offering considered strategic advice to arrive at the best outcome for them and their family.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

Probably settling the case referred to above after a two day settlement hearing. It was the right outcome for the client and their family to reach an agreement consensually thereby avoiding an expensive and highly stressful final hearing in the High Court.

What do you consider to be the most important attributes for a leader?

Directness and empathy.

Who do you most admire and why?

Lady Sue Carr who has recently become the first female Chief Justice in a role which has been around for hundreds of years.

Where was the last place you travelled to for work or pleasure?

France for a friend’s wedding.

If you weren’t in this industry, what else might you be doing?

I have always wanted to work in a bookshop or undertake a PhD in the History of Medicine.

How do you relax after a long day?

A swim and then a BBC drama with some dark chocolate digestives!
