Five Experiences that are guaranteed to surprise and delight
In a time when so much of travel feels filtered, templated, and expected, it’s the unplanned moments that truly stay with us. The things no one warned you about (in the best way).

A pangolin sniffing out its breakfast beside you. A giraffe joining your afternoon tea. An elephant strolls through reception as though it owns the place. These aren’t the predictable highlights — they’re the joyful curveballs that make travel extraordinary. This week, we’re bringing you five standout experiences from our Members that are guaranteed to surprise and delight. Whether it’s fishing on safari or finding a bush breakfast that completely rethinks the traditional safari spread, each one is proof that Africa still has a few tricks up its sleeve. And because we couldn’t help ourselves, there’s also a bonus sixth experience waiting at the end. You didn’t expect that, did you?
A walk to remember
You’ve heard of tracking lions, but how about following a pangolin to breakfast? At Gorongosa Safaris in Mozambique, guests staying 5+ nights are invited into a deeply personal encounter: joining the team at the Pangolin Restoration Project as they monitor and walk with rescued pangolins during their early morning forage. These gentle, armour-plated creatures are the world’s most trafficked mammals, and seeing one in the wild is incredibly rare. It’s not loud. It’s not fast. But it’s one of the most quietly powerful and delightful experiences.
Gone fishing on safari
Kwandwe is known for its landscapes and exceptional Big Five sightings, but there’s another side to safari here, one that invites you to try something new. Fishing at Galpin Dam offers guests a quiet, off-the-radar activity that’s as rewarding as it is relaxing. Ideal for families, it’s a chance to spend time together in nature between game drives and enjoy a different kind of connection. It’s unexpected, easy-going, and adds a whole new rhythm to your time on safari.
A warm, wild welcome
Most expect a cool towel and a welcome drink at check-in, but at Mfuwe Lodge, it’s not unusual to be greeted by a much larger guest. Each year, from October to December, a local elephant family casually strolls through reception to their favourite tree in the courtyard. It’s an extraordinary sight, and one that has become part of the lodge’s rhythm. For guests, it’s a surreal and joyful reminder that here, in the South Luangwa, the wildlife truly sets the pace.
Bush breakfast of dreams
At Tanda Tula, food takes a fresh and thoughtful turn under Chef Ryan’s direction: light, flavourful, and beautifully plated. This contemporary approach is carried through to the much-loved bush breakfast, served after morning game drives under the trees in a dry riverbed. With scrambled eggs, spicy chicken livers, and grilled sausages cooked over open flames, it’s relaxed, soulful dining with a serious side of wilderness.
Tall tea time treats
Sharing tea with a giraffe might feel like something out of a dream, but at Giraffe Manor, it’s a delightful surprise that’s part of a much bigger story. The resident Nubian/Rothschild’s giraffes, one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies, roam freely as part of a decades-long conservation effort. While it’s an unexpected joy to have these graceful animals join you for breakfast or tea, it’s also a powerful reminder of the ongoing work to protect them. More than just a photo opportunity, it’s an experience that surprises and connects you.
