Nathan Prior, Partners Wealth Management – Citywealth Leaders List, 60 seconds interview
This week’s 60-second Citywealth Leaders List interview is dedicated to Nathan Prior, Partner, Head of Partners Wealth Management International.

Citywealth’s leading wealth managers on our Leaders List
Tell Citywealth readers a bit about your role.
I joined Partners Wealth Management about 10 years ago and set up our international service. Through this full independent financial advice business, we wanted to help families with split residence and US citizens living in the UK, to manage challenges with multi-jurisdictional investing or tax considerations.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Each day is different, which is great. But typically, I will catch up with the team in the morning to check on properties and discuss any client cases that need attention. Most of my day is often spent meeting with new or existing clients, either to provide advice on their particular needs or to review how their existing plan and investments are progressing.
I’ll often also interact with other private client industry professionals on cases we are working together on, or to discuss general industry developments.
As one of the more senior advisers in the practice, I am also involved in broader projects, such as fine-tuning service offerings, updating/maintaining materials, or supporting other advisers.
Tell us about some recent, interesting client instructions/requests you have received.
My colleagues often joke that I attract complex cases, and in truth I quite like them. The change in how non-domiciles or temporary residents in the UK are now taxed has created some interesting scenarios.
In a recent case, a non-UK citizen had moved to the UK from the US and then sold her US business. Initially this was to be covered by the remittance basis rules in place at that time. However, because her payments are staggered over several years, part of them will be received under the new Foreign Income and Gains rules. We therefore worked with her tax advisers to produce a multi-year plan and account structure that optimises her receipts and cashflows, both for the sale proceeds but also future needs.
What challenges do your clients face and how are you helping your clients to overcome them?
The fluidity of tax rules and frequency of changes have been a challenge for clients over recent years. This is a challenge both for clients with established plans and strategies and for those setting out a new long-term plan.
We support our existing clients by regularly reviewing their overall strategy in light of new or incoming or proposed rule changes. For other individuals and families, we also produce and publish informational blogs or guides to highlight what is happening or being discussed.
More broadly, I am a believer that retaining flexibility in plans and strategies is essential, because change over a long period is almost guaranteed.
What is your proudest professional achievement?
Transitioning from my early career as an investment adviser and retraining to be a holistic financial planner for international families was a bit of a risk. I cannot pinpoint the exact moment, but a few years into the journey and having developed the service at PWM, I realised that not only was the service credible, it was one of the fastest-growing areas of advice in the firm.
What do you consider to be the most important attributes for a leader?
I think leading by doing and with experience is extremely important and valued. A leader who truly understands what team members are doing and can help direct and guide them will achieve a much bigger impact.
Another important attribute is knowing when to get out of the way and empower others to take the lead. That might be because they are better equipped or because a leader needs to remember they cannot do everything and instead needs to allow others the space to develop themselves.
Who do you most admire and why?
Different people for different reasons. Of course, there are professional and business leaders I admire for their drive and courage to innovate and build. There are also people whose lives are dedicated to service in various guises. I don’t think one deserves more admiration over the other but instead admire them for their own qualities.
Where was the last place you travelled to for work or pleasure?
Most recent travel was to Italy on a family holiday. My wife and I both have demanding jobs, so it’s essential for us to carve out quality time with our three children.
If you weren’t in this industry, what else might you be doing?
I recall when I was a child, I thought being a teacher could be fun. But knowing more about it as a parent, I have huge respect for what teachers do and think I would fail if I tried to become one.
How do you relax after a long day?
I like to switch my brain off and do something different at the end of the day; preferably get home before bedtime and spend some time with my family. Maybe walk the dog, play a game – but more realistically, find something to watch together on TV.
