Citywealth Leaders List, 60 seconds interview – James Sturla, Head of Private Client Business Development at Hampden Capital
This week’s 60-second Citywealth Leaders List interview is dedicated to James Sturla, Head of Private Client Business Development at Hampden Capital.

Tell Citywealth readers a bit about your role.
As the Head of Private Client Business Development at Hampden Capital, my job entails acquiring new private clients to invest their capital at Lloyd’s of London with Hampden. I am also raising the profile of Lloyd’s as an alternative asset class with UHNW investors and Family Offices, working closely with intermediaries such as Wealth Managers, Lawyers, Trustees and Tax Advisers in our key markets – namely the UK, UAE, Switzerland and Channel Islands.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day comes with variety – if in the office, I will be presenting Hampden’s proposition and Lloyd’s to new introductions or meeting with intermediaries. I am often travelling to attend private client forums and events in the UK or internationally with new business development in mind.
Tell us about some recent, interesting client instructions/requests you have received.
Working with a sophisticated investor based in Dubai with assets in the UK and looking to invest capital at Lloyd’s for inheritance tax planning purposes for his young family.
What challenges do your clients face and how are you helping your clients to overcome them?
I work with professional intermediaries and advisers to UHNW individuals and families addressing their client’s estate planning and investment allocation needs, helping them to understand how investing in Lloyd’s insurance can be a compelling, diversified and uncorrelated asset allocation decision.
What is your proudest professional achievement?
I was proud to have Board approval of my business development strategy paper, detailing the next 5-year strategic plan for the Hampden business and growth thereof.
What do you consider to be the most important attributes for a leader?
I believe one attribute that underpins all others is integrity – a word that carries great weight and even greater impact when enacted. A leader wanting to earn respect, demonstrate stewardship and confront adversity will struggle to do so without this. Communication, recognising one’s weak spots, tackling challenges head on and celebrating successes are also strong attributes.
Who do you most admire and why?
Michael Palin – a funny, gentlemanly and worldly man.
Where was the last place you travelled to for work or pleasure?
Jersey.
If you weren’t in this industry, what else might you be doing?
Either plying my trade in the diplomatic service living in various embassies around the world or running a classic car business.
How do you relax after a long day?
I frequently play squash, tackle my reading list or think about where to travel to next.
