Tell Citywealth readers a bit about your role.

I’m a solicitor and equity partner, and I head the Private Client department at my firm. In my role, I combine strategic leadership with hands on legal work: I oversee the department and manage my team, contribute to the overall running of the business, and maintain my own caseload. Whilst I cover all areas of private client work, I specialise in contentious matters and also act as a professional deputy for many protected parties.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My typical day may start with the gym, the school run, and sometimes a quick dog walk. No two days are ever the same.  I balance client matters, strategic oversight, and running the business, while dedicating time to mentoring my team and developing future leaders. There are always meetings, but I also focus on business development, client engagement, and sometimes business lunches or networking dinners. My days are busy and varied but that’s what I love.

Tell us about some recent, interesting client instructions/requests you have received.

In recent months, I’ve observed an increase in client interest around challenging wills or making claims against estates. While I can’t reference any specific instructions due to confidentiality, there seems to be a trend linked to increasingly complex family structures. For example, blended families, multiple partnerships, and previously unconsidered children or hidden assets are giving rise to intricate situations that weren’t fully anticipated by the deceased. It’s fascinating to see how societal changes and evolving family dynamics are influencing estate planning and inheritance disputes. Some of these structures have existed for some time, but the complexity and interconnection of multiple partners and blended families have become more pronounced, which presents both challenges and opportunities for careful estate management and advice.

What challenges do your clients face and how are you helping your clients to overcome them?

One element of my work involves supporting vulnerable and elderly clients who face the challenge of losing mental capacity. With people living longer, we are seeing a rise in conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as other long-term illnesses. This can leave individuals and their families in very difficult situations, particularly when no prior planning has been put in place. I often step in when capacity has already been lost, which means making applications to the Court of Protection for deputyship orders and guiding families through what can be a daunting process. I also advise on safeguarding vulnerable individuals, as sadly I have seen cases where people are taken advantage of in these circumstances. For example, we recently acted in a Court of Protection application to prevent a predatory marriage.

This is just one aspect of my work, but it illustrates the kind of challenges many of my clients face and how I help them to navigate those challenges, while always keeping their protection, dignity and best interests at the forefront.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

My proudest professional achievement is becoming an equity partner at Bindmans. This is quite rare for an Asian woman in a Central London law firm and I am proud to be breaking through glass ceilings in this space. I hope that my journey as a woman of colour can inspire and motivate future generations of young women from diverse backgrounds to pursue their ambitions with confidence.

What do you consider to be the most important attributes for a leader?

I believe the most important attributes for a leader are integrity, empathy, vision and the ability to inspire and empower others. Integrity is crucial because a leader’s actions set the standard for the whole team; people need to trust that decisions are made fairly and transparently. Empathy allows a leader to understand and support their team, fostering collaboration and loyalty. Vision is key, as it provides direction and motivates people to work towards a shared goal. Finally, a great leader empowers others, recognising and developing their strengths, and creating an environment where people feel valued and motivated to perform at their best.

Who do you most admire and why?

I could easily pick one woman of colour who has broken glass ceilings and made history, and there are many who deserve admiration for that. But for me, it is not just about one individual right now, it’s about a collective. I most admire the younger generation coming through today. They show such strength and determination in a world that is not easy to navigate. They are entering a society where the job market is tough, housing is out of reach for many, and the cost of living is incredibly high. They are facing challenges created by generations before them, and yet they still push forward, pursuing education, going to university and striving to carve out the lives they want.

Where was the last place you travelled to for work or pleasure?

The last place I travelled to was Murcia in South East Spain. I went in July with my family.

If you weren’t in this industry, what else might you be doing?

If I was not in this industry, I think I’d probably be orchestrating people’s happiest days as a wedding planner or events organise – I love creating memorable experiences. I’d also be tempted by content creation, sharing ideas and stories that inspire people. And in my wildest dreams? I’d be a travel writer, exploring the world, eating, drinking and working all at once, because I feel I was born to travel, and I’ve not done nearly enough of it yet

How do you relax after a long day?

I relax by creating a space to unwind and reflect, whether that is cooking, taking long walks or spending time with my children and appreciating their perspective on the world.
