What does a typical day look like for you?
No day is truly “typical” in my role as Group Head of Trust at Butterfield Group, but there are some constants. I usually start early, often with a quick check of any overnight developments from our teams in Asia and Europe before the Bermuda workday begins. We’ll have a brief morning huddle with my local executive team to set priorities, and I review the day’s schedule with my PA to stay on top of key meetings and client calls. Because Butterfield Trust spans several time zones, my evenings might include a call with colleagues or clients in Singapore. In between, I spend time on strategic planning and client discussions – and I always try to catch up informally with team members. It makes for long days, but I enjoy the variety and global scope of our work.

Tell us about some recent, interesting client instructions/requests you have received.
We’ve recently been asked to see if we can establish a charitable trust for a Generational Impact client investing in a major land restoration and carbon-credit project in Africa. The goal is to channel revenues from carbon‑credit monetisation to tangible, long‑term benefits for the indigenous community, including agroforestry support, education, and youth training. This is exciting: it combines environmental finance, evolving international carbon standards, and meaningful impact for a local community through a robust trust structure.

What challenges do your clients face and how are you helping your clients to overcome them?
Many of our clients are navigating an increasingly complex world. Regulatory and tax changes, geopolitical events, and economic uncertainty all pose challenges. Because our client families are international, they worry about staying compliant and efficient in multiple jurisdictions. We help by staying ahead of these changes and working closely with their advisers to adjust structures as needed. Another common challenge is preparing the next generation to inherit wealth. We often facilitate family governance discussions and educational sessions for younger family members, so they feel prepared and responsible. Ultimately, our goal is to provide stability and guidance, giving clients peace of mind that whatever the challenge, we’ll help them find a solution.

What is your proudest professional achievement?
My proudest professional achievement is undoubtedly the strong team culture we’ve cultivated. A standout moment for me was hearing a colleague describe me as a leader who would “run through a brick wall” for the team—and that they’d do the same for me. Such feedback underscores the mutual trust and commitment we’ve established. Our success is reflected not only in our cohesion but also in tangible growth, such as achieving 17 promotions last year alone. This demonstrates our consistent ability to attract, retain, and nurture talent, empowering individuals to advance into senior roles. Seeing colleagues flourish professionally and knowing we wholeheartedly support each other is immensely rewarding.

What do you consider to be the most important attributes for a leader?
Integrity and empathy are absolutely fundamental. Integrity is critical because your team and clients need to trust that you will do the right thing, even when no one’s watching. Empathy is equally important – listening to your people and understanding their perspectives fosters loyalty and brings out the best in everyone. I also believe in leading by example and staying accessible. A good leader shouldn’t ask others to do something they wouldn’t do themselves. If you set a clear vision, communicate openly, and show that you genuinely care about your team, you create an environment where people are motivated to excel.

Who do you most admire and why?
It might sound unexpected, but I’ve always admired Coco Chanel. She was a true pioneer – a woman who built a global business empire at a time when female leaders in business were exceedingly rare. Coco Chanel didn’t always get everything right, but her creativity and determination broke countless boundaries. She managed to be an entrepreneur and a business innovator while still caring for family, which I find admirable. And beyond business, she fundamentally changed how women dress and carry themselves, empowering women to present themselves with confidence and independence. I’m inspired by her boldness, resilience, and the way she proved that women could lead and succeed on their own terms.

Where was the last place you travelled to for work or pleasure?
Japan. I recently travelled to Tokyo for pleasure and I added a short holiday to explore Kyoto afterwards. The trip was incredible. Tokyo is such a dynamic city; I was energised by the innovation and hospitality I experienced. Then in Kyoto I had a chance to slow down and take in the beautiful temples and gardens – it was the perfect balance to the bustle of Tokyo. I even picked up a few boxes of Japanese green tea to bring home. It was a memorable journey and I returned with fresh perspectives (and maybe a sushi addiction!)

If you weren’t in this industry, what else might you be doing?
I’ve always had a bit of an entrepreneurial streak, so if I weren’t in wealth management, I suspect I’d be building something of my own.

How do you relax after a long day?
I try to prioritise wellness and a bit of “me-time” to unwind. On many evenings, I’ll do a Pilates session – it helps me stretch out, clear my head and release the day’s stress. I find it’s a great way to transition out of work mode. And I won’t lie, I do love a good glass of wine when the day is done with my husband and watching a favourite show. It’s those simple pleasures – a workout, a splash of Pinot Noir, and time with family – that help me recharge for the next day.
