Samara Karoo Reserve
Samara Karoo Reserve – Star Bed

Founded in 1997, Samara Karoo Reserve is a conservation journey on 67,000 acres of born-again wilderness in South Africa’s heart-stoppingly beautiful Great Karoo region. Samara has pioneered the rewilding of this semi-arid yet uniquely biodiverse landscape. It has catalysed an ambitious vision to expand the conservation estate to a 3-million-acre footprint in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot. Staying at one of Samara’s lodges acts as a direct contribution to this vision.

Today the reserve is one of South Africa’s most diverse safari destinations. It comprises five vegetation biomes across strikingly varied topography, home to over 60 mammal species including the Big Five and cheetah, as well as 225 species of bird.

Samara Karoo Reserve for responsible tourism

Sleeping two, Samara Karoo Reserve’s ‘Star Bed’ on the Milk River provides a wilderness experience to take your breath away. Arrive at sunset for a picnic dinner and drinks, then watch as the local wildlife descends to the water holes. Take in spectacular views over the mountainous landscape and watch the night sky fill with stars. This is one of the best places in the world for stargazing thanks to the low light pollution. Awake to the big skies and birdsong of the Karoo as another day dawns in South Africa.

Samara adopts a responsible tourism model to fund its conservation objectives, with a focus on slow and meaningful safari encounters that inspire a deep connection with the wild spaces of the Great Karoo. Two intimate luxury lodges sleeping up to 26 guests welcome discerning nature-lovers for exceptional wilderness and wildlife experiences in one of the lowest guest-to-land ratios in Africa.

Nightly rates from £333 (R6,825) per person in Karoo Lodge. A night in the Star Bed is an additional £244 (R5,000) per couple, subject to a minimum 3-night stay in Karoo Lodge or The Manor. Available October to May.
