Wearing an SPF is one of the most important steps in your daily skincare routine. A good sunscreen needs to block UVA and UVB rays to protect against skin damage and premature ageing, in addition to blocking High Energy Visible (HEV) blue light which is emitted from the sun and our digital devices. Find out more about protecting your skin from blue light here.
Did you know that 80 per cent of premature skin ageing is thought to be due to UV radiation? Wearing SPF is the best anti-ageing product you can buy.
What should I be looking for on the label?
When selecting a SPF there are a few key words you should be looking for on the packaging.
Broad spectrum – look for the term broad spectrum or UVA protection to ensure you are getting protection from UVA because thee isn’t a universally accepted way to measure UVA protection.
SPF 50 - The higher the SPF the better the protection but this numerical part only relates to UVB rays. It’s a measure of how much longer is takes protected skin to start to burn compared to unprotected skin.
Application – read the instructions and ensure you are reapplying as often as needed.
Expiry dates – all sun blocks have an expiry date because they are unstable over time.
HEV protection – HEV penetrates deeply into the skin and causes free radical damage and inflammation. Broad spectrum SPFs will provide protection but for even more protection add an antioxidant serum.
