Investing in wine – sommelier top picks

13 November 2018

April French Furnell

At Citywealth’s most recent Powerwomen Club held at Morton’s in Berkeley Square, sommelier Jean-Louis Naveilhan shared his top picks in the wine market.

Born in Paris, Jean-Louis brings a passion for excellence in his quest to find great wines, sake & spirits to his clients. Earning his diploma from world-renowned Tain l’Hermitage, and certified by the International Court of Sommeliers as well as one of a handful of holders of the Sake Educator certificate, Jean-Louis has spent nearly 20 years living and working in London.

Donnhoff Kreuznacher Krotenpfuhl Riesling Kabinett (Magnums) 2013 £39 + VAT
Piercing minerality and crisp acidity on the nose, pronounced peach, herbal and bees wax aromas. A whiff of petrol lurking from behind. It is off-dry on the palate, perfectly balanced by its crisp acidity. A pronounced intensity of peach fruit introduces an incredibly long impression on the palate, which gradually becomes more herbal, turning slowly into spiced pear and finally ending in a distinctly mineral taste.

Citywealth says: “A clear favourite among attendees at the Club, this Riesling is a great crowd-pleaser for dinner parties.”

Le Volte dell Ornellaia, Tuscany-Italy 2015 £16.55 + VAT
A blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the philosophy and savoir-faire of Ornellaia in Tuscany. Rarely do we find a perfect balance between the various components of the wine, from the deep ruby colour, to the crisp and fresh fruity hints with an ideally meaty texture, supported by silky, smooth tannins, devoid of any harsh edge.

Jean-Louis says: “2015 was one those years that every winemaker dreams of having at least once in his career. The balanced season with a warm and sunny summer, but with a cool, dry weather during the harvest produced wines that perfectly denote the seasonal trend.”

Michel Magnien Morey St Denis, Burgundy-France 2015 £33.50 + VAT
Frédéric Magnien is the fifth generation to run the family estate based in Morey-Saint-Denis. He joined his father, Michel in 1993 and has gradually tempered the style, reducing the amount of new oak and producing wines with more aroma, fruit and elegance without losing the trademark Magnien depth and richness. The domaine has expanded from 4 hectares in 1967 to 19 hectares today with the whole estate being farmed biodynamically since 2010.

Jean-Louis says: “An under-rated village that makes full-bodied, characterful wines. Big, rich, gamey wine with ripe red and black fruits on the nose. Rich, succulent texture and long fresh aftertaste.”

Quinta do Vale D Maria Vintage Port 2000 £38.20 + VAT
This old property is situated in the heart of the Douro Valley and is owned and run by the talented Cristiano van Zeller. He had spent time working at Quinta do Noval, the historic port house, but left in 1993 to create his own independent winery.

Jean-Louis says: “Sweet, rich nose which displays a spicy edge. The palate shows great concentration of sweet spicy fruit.”

Sake Umami Junmai Genshu Koshu 2014 Kidoizumi 18% Alc £30 +VAT
This vintage saké is the best way to demonstrate that premium saké can age and evolve just like a wine. Rich and with a deep taste of peach, violets, and a touch of hay, this is a full-bodied saké with a lot of force. Yamadanishiki rice.

Citywealth says: “A unique flavour experience; we have it on good authority this is the next big thing in terms of investment!”
