On January 28th, critically acclaimed Portuguese wine bar and restaurant Bar Douro, will open their second site in the new Finsbury Avenue Square development at Broadgate. Helmed by restaurateur Max Graham, Bar Douro will be bringing to the City its contemporary take on traditional Portuguese cuisine and expertly sourced regional wines, for which the London Bridge flagship is well known for.
An authority on Portuguese drinking and dining in London, the new Bar Douro will offer a more extensive menu, delving deeper into Portugal's regional gastronomy from the Minho in the North to the Algarve in the South. Commenting on the new menu, Max says: “We have only just scratched the surface of Portugal's rich culinary traditions and with our second, larger space we are excited to further explore the wealth of Portuguese cuisine”.
The menu is a voyage through Portugal, highlighting regional dishes alongside national classics. The Petiscos (snacks) selection will see Bar Douro favourites such as Croquetes de Alheira with smoked sausage from Mirandela in the North East, Fried Eels with Bairrada sauce, a local delicacy from coastal city, Aveiro; and the return of award winning Sandes de Leitão, Sucking pig sandwich in Bolo do Caco, a flat bread made with sweet potato from Madeira. Small plates will be divided into dishes from garden, land and sea including Squash with homemade requeijão a creamy Portuguese cheese, Bacalhau à Brás salt cod hash, succulent Gambas á la Guilho and Presa Ibérico with kale migas. New to the city the menu will include Cataplana's, traditional copper pots deriving from the Algarve and Tachos de Barro Preto, black clay pots from Vila Real; both containing a rotating selection of seafood stews, rice dishes and braised meats such as Arroz de Sapateira Crab Rice and Pork à Alentejana, a traditional pork dish made with clams, potatoes and coriander.
To finish, guests can choose from a selection of sobremesas including baked to order Pão-de-ló de Ovar, a gooey egg-based sponge cake, traditional Pastel de Nata’s served with cinnamon ice cream or feast upon a simple Tarte de Amêndoa, loaded with toasted almonds.
Bar Douro City’s wine selection will journey through Portugal's growing regions from the Douro to the Azores, celebrating the diversity of the country’s wine offering and championing native grape varieties of which there are over 250. The menu will make up one of London’s largest selection of Portuguese wines which will include their changing house selection and a Cellar List of fine wines. Bar Douro City will launch with a program of regular wine dinners and events that will host acclaimed and independent Portuguese wine makers following the success of their sell out ‘In Conversation’ wine dinners series in Flat Iron Square. The drinks menu will be complimented by refreshing White Port & Tonic’s alongside a refined Portuguese gin selection featuring specially imported bottles such as Cobalto and Adamus. Imported Portuguese spirits, including Mavem Aguaardente aged brandy, known for its vanilla, caramel and orange notes, along with liqueurs from Wild Bunch & Co will complete the drinks list.
Located in a Grade II-listed building, the interiors will be led by architecture and interior designer Steph Gallia who has selected Portugal’s most famous furniture makers Olaio, to produce bespoke seating and furniture. The walls will be adorned with stunning hand-painted Portuguese tiles - ‘Azulejos’, inspired by 15th century motifs in the Azulejo Museum in Lisbon and a statement Portuguese marble countertop imported from Aveiro in Portugal. Benefiting from increased floor space than its sister site in London Bridge, Bar Douro City will feature an open kitchen with counter seating at the bar, a spacious dining room space, and for a true Portuguese dining experience, a sheltered outdoor terrace is available for al fresco dining all year round.
