Allsopp Wedel Gallery has an inaugural exhibition in West London showing top Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi's, in his first European solo exhibition and his UK debut.
One of the 'Big Five' and China's leading painters, Zeng Fanzhi is highly acclaimed within Asia and is only the third contemporary Chinese artist to have had a retrospective at the Shanghai Art Museum - his work reaching high prices at auction. There's been serious interest from collectors in the exhibition.
Wedel is sharing a gallery space, a New York-led initiative, at Allsopp Wedel, with collector Henry Allsopp. Wedel is the brainchild of Amelie von Wedel, who is one of the world's leading art consultants on Chinese contemporary art and the space will specialise in this area. Amelie herself will provide an individual service to visitors, offering authoritative advice and guidance.
Was born in 1964, and graduated in 1991 from Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, China, where he studied oil painting. Today, he lives and works in Beijing.
Zeng Fanzhi has been notable over the last decade for his characteristic mask series where symbolic and metaphoric connotations are inherent in the creation of each painting through character, costume, demeanour and emotions expressed.
Zeng Fanzhi is only the third contemporary Chinese artist to be afforded a retrospective at the Shanghai Art Museum - his solo exhibition took place in March 2003.
