Silvia Merler, Head of ESG & Public Policy at Algebris Investments, comments on the importance of the COP15 biodiversity summit:

The importance of the COP15 biodiversity summit – where nations will convene to discuss a new set of goals for nature over the next decade through the Convention on Biological Diversity post-2020 framework process – cannot be overestimated. Over recent decades, humans have been living well beyond their planetary means. Ever since 1970, humanity has been running a growing biocapacity deficit and in 2022 alone, humanity required almost two planets-worth of ecological resources to meet its demands.

This is not sustainable in the long run and – absent change – it would imperil many of the processes that are essential to human existence, including for example food production. Focus needs to increase on the topic of biodiversity, both among policymakers and in the finance world. The contribution of climate finance to tackling sustainability challenges in the food system – which has a heavy footprint both in terms of emissions and land use – has been marginal so far, and there is significant room for improvement when it comes to integrating biodiversity-related metrics in investment processes.”
