The most authentic and exclusive way to enjoy the African wilderness.

Abercrombie & Kent (A&K) established the first luxury photographic safari over 60 years ago, when founder Geoffrey Kent introduced refrigeration to the bush. Today, the award-winning travel company has announced a new mobile tented camp in Kenya, where it all began. The exclusive use camp stays true to the traditional, time-honoured way to experience Kenya’s wilderness, while boasting modern amenities and eco-friendly credentials. Set to open in June 2023, the camp can be set up in the wildlife-rich plains of the Masai Mara or in Ol Pejeta, home to the last two northern white rhinos on earth – promising immersion in some of Africa’s most magnificent landscapes.

“We are thrilled to launch our newest mobile tented camp in Kenya, which offers an immersive and authentic safari experience that is second to none,” says Geoffrey Kent, Founder of A&K. “Kenya is the quintessential safari destination, and where I started A&K over 60 years ago. With its vast savannahs, incredible wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, Kenya offers the same authentic safari experience that A&K made famous. Our camp is designed to provide guests with an unforgettable journey through this stunning landscape, where they can connect with nature, learn about the local culture, and create memories, while leaving zero footprint.”

Design

Conceived and designed by A&K’s unrivalled safari specialists, the camp can be set up with two to 12 tents, accommodating an intimate group of four or up to 24 friends and family. There are two family tents, connected by a corridor between tents that allows adults and children to reach each other without having to leave their room – something never seen before in a mobile camp in East Africa.

Inside each of the locally made tents, bespoke furniture nods to Kenyan heritage, with Kitenge prints used throughout. Modern comforts include charging points by beds, 24-hour solar electricity, laundry service, and en-suite bathrooms featuring a modern flushing toilet, a tin basin sink with running water, and a large shower served with hot water. After a restful night’s sleep in the comfortable king or twin beds, guests can enjoy their morning coffee on the private veranda, overlooking the wild surrounds.

Once the safari finishes, the camp is packed up, leaving no trace.

Bush Dining

The dining tent stands as a resplendent centrepiece of the camp, where guests gather to eat delicious meals prepared by the camp’s masterful chefs. These culinary virtuosos meticulously craft their dishes using only the finest, locally sourced ingredients, ensuring seasonality and catering to guests’ tastes. Alternatively, guests can enjoy freshly prepared fare under the stars by the campfire.

When it’s time to unwind after a day’s adventure, the camp’s fully stocked bar awaits with an impressive array of premium wines, spirits, and Kenyan-made craft beers, inviting guests to indulge in a sundowner amid the spectacular scenery.

Wildlife Adventures

Activities are dependent on the location of the camp and can be tailored to suit guests. In the Masai Mara, embark on private 4×4 game drives, glide over the majestic plains in a hot-air balloon, or enjoy a picnic lunch created by the chef. In Ol Pejeta Conservancy, days can be spent on guided bush walks, tracking lions, or visiting the endangered species boma. A&K’s expert guides will enrich the experience throughout with their knowledge and enthusiasm.

A&K Philanthropy

Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP) has several ongoing projects in Kenya, aimed at supporting the local communities and promoting conservation efforts. Guests at A&K Exclusive Tented Camp can visit these projects, offering them the chance to give back to the communities they visit, while experiencing the enticing culture and enchanting landscape of Kenya. One of AKP’s most significant projects in Kenya is a lunch feeding program at two schools in the Masai Mara – Enkereri School and Partakilat School, where over 600 lunches are given each day. Guests can visit the schools, meeting with students and teachers to learn more about AKP’s work and its impact on the local community. This year, after AKP implemented the lunch feeding programme, Partakilat went from being one of the lowest achieving schools in the national examinations to the best in the entire Masai Mara region.
