Celebrating a year of tenacity: Magic Circle Awards 2022
17 May 2022 will mark the return of our in-person Magic Circle Awards gala dinner, our flagship awards where we recognise the talent and achievements of the private wealth sector during the past 12 months. Ahead of the event, we’re pleased to reveal this year’s shortlist.

Each year the awards highlight the ups and downs, triumphs amid adversity, innovation in the wake of sector challenges, consolidation and new market entrants. The submissions tell a story.
Commenting on this year’s shortlisted contenders, CEO and founder of Citywealth, Karen Jones said: “Wealth managers and advisors demonstrated tenacity during a worldwide emergency which triggered a widespread uptick in wills, estate planning, succession and relocations. The industry as a whole displayed the ever-important soft skills of a Private Client advisor or manager, not only to ensure that they carried on ‘business as usual’ but to maintain a relationship as a trusted adviser, calming panic and fear, despite the extra challenges imposed by a worldwide pandemic. I believe the industry, demonstrated compassion, expertise and care as part and parcel of their normal private client work to stay steady when the ship was shaking. They also demonstrated how to deal with the complexities their clients faced against the covid backdrop and the humanistic element and skills that are pivotal to the private client role. As a result, we celebrate and recognise how the industry stepped up to care for their clients”.
Alongside the focus on clients, the wellbeing of employees also became a priority and this comes across in the submissions on behalf of organisations. Leaders found their softer skills as much in demand as more traditional business skills. Examples across the submissions included hosting zoom bake-offs and cook-a-longs, to checking in on those isolated from friends and family, to virtual pubs.
We also saw the growing prominence of ESG as a mainstream investment strategy, and its impact on how organisations view themselves internally and externally.
The contenders for Family/Matrimonial Law Firm of the Year, describe the challenges of the court backlogs due to the pandemic, and the growing importance of private FDRs, mediation and arbitration as a way of speeding up the process.
The shortlisted Philanthropy Advisors of the Year remind us all of the role that philanthropy can play in responding quickly to great challenges, including highlight achievements such as the incredible work of philanthropists in backing science needed to create vaccines to respond to the global pandemic.
In the Private Investment Office of the Year we see the tailored, personal approach to wealth management which has stood the test of time, and in the Tomorrow Club Award we acknowledge the rising stars of the industry.
These are just a few examples of the categories in the awards, the full list including the shortlist can be viewed here.
